The Invisible Tech Tax On Solopreneurs

Making sense of the tools you definitely need, and what to do when they all break.
2

I broke the podcast.

This isn’t clickbait and it’s not a joke.

I accidentally duplicated our RSS feed, sending a new, empty copy of the show (and all our episodes) spiraling across Spotify, Apple, and Amazon.

Whoops.

It wasn’t as bad as it could have been (did you see what

dealt with last week??). I’m lucky. And grateful this wasn’t worse. Thankfully, I knew how to fix this lil mess o’ mine.

Before I ever made a dollar as a solopreneur, I’d spent hundreds and hundreds of hours breaking things in tech tool settings.

No, not on purpose?

Ok, that’s not entirely true…

I definitely do like to take stuff apart to see how it works. And to test something I know won’t work, just to verify exactly what’ll happen when it fails.

But this time was an accident, I pinky promise!!

Each mistake over the years has offered a lesson.

As your tech chops improve, it gets harder to explain what you actually do to those who can’t see behind the curtain.

Because when the work is good, it starts to look invisible.

Until it breaks, of course.

Then everybody’s like, “Oh look! You fucked up, huh?”

Why, yes.

So when stuff does break, beneath layers of every-day settings that always run smoothly, it can be hard to communicate just how complex the problem is to fix it.

Especially when you’re breaking (lol) the bad news to a leadership team that only wants to know when the campaign is going live. Or rather, how much it’s costing them while it’s not live.

The Unobstructed Podcast: Episode 16

In this episode, Rachael and I dive into the reality of running a solo business and what you need to know about tools for strategic and technical work at extreme levels.

We talk about what it actually takes to show the value of invisible systems, and why it’s easy to get stuck between all tools that don’t talk to each other. That’s where I also share the lovely story of how I accidentally broke this very podcast’s RSS feed.

We also unpack:

  • “Simple” tech tools to avoid that lead to burnout.

  • How to frame your value when nobody can see under the hood.

  • What 4 tools to prioritize as a solopreneur building your own tech stack.

Any other late night software repair artists in the audience? If you’ve ever found yourself over-explaining your work, high five! I been there a time or two (or a million). And this one’s for you.

You can also get it on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Amazon Music.

onward.
