I hit this realization about willpower a few years ago, but still haven't designed the right environment to boot out some bad habits with ones I want so I can build the life I want.
Though I am getting closer and closer. I'm hitting the gym again (FINALLY) next week by doing what I used to do -- schedule the time and when the alarm goes off, just go, put gym cloths on the morning to remove even that tiny friction. My version of the shoes by the door (and my gym shoes live by my front door too).
Not been drinking enough water, so I've got a 64 ounce pitcher, sit it on my kitchen counter, and make sure it's empty by the end of the day (my other 32 ounces come from my regular 2 mugs of tea in the morning).
Loved all of this, man. Especially the vignette of the women on the bench (and here's to hoping the consolation was for a minor, not major, life setback). One of my guilty pleasures is when you're driving on a residential street at night and you get a glimpse through a window at a couple on a couch, or family at a table, or what have you and then just make a story up.
I’m convinced getting closer is all we can ever do. There is no finish line. Small tweaks to our surroundings, one at a time, make life better. Slowly but surely.
I’m with you in the water, too—if it’s not in front of my face, it’s not happening lol.
Glad you liked the vignette! And glad I’m not the only one who sees people and invents backstories for them. A bit meta? Yes. But it always gets me thinking about my own life and choices.

May the odds be ever in our favor.
